Overview

This information has been summarized and reduced in order to provide a basic understanding; exceptions are not fully covered. Please always refer to current FARs to get all necessary details.

FAR 61.83 [Eligibility Requirements] [Excerpt]

  1. Be at least 16 years of age for other than the operation of a glider or balloon.
  2. Be at least 14 years of age for the operation of a glider or balloon.
  3. Be able to read, speak, write and understand the English language.

Except while seeking a pilot certificate with a glider category rating or balloon class rating, you must hold at least a current third-class medical certificate to exercise the privileges of a student pilot certificate.

FAR 61.85 [Application]

The fastest and simplest way to obtain your new FAA hard plastic student pilot certificate is to register online with IACRA (Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application) and start an application.

Your flight school will help you with this process and will also verify your identity before the application is submitted to the FAA.
